Ohming Technology, (www.Ohming.com), a company focused on products that make it more convenient to charge multiple devices simultaneously, is weighing in on a new proposal by AMC to allow cell phone usage in movie theaters.
The new CEO of AMC Adam Aron, is proposing a new concept that would allow moviegoers to use their cell phones while watching a film. The idea is aimed squarely at addressing Millennials and creating an experience in line with their habits. “This is a generation that loves their cell phones,” says Paul Romanenko, owner and CEO of Ohming Technology. “Theaters don’t want to be in a position where this generation doesn’t connect with movies inside of theaters the same way baby boomers have. Millennials are the dominant demographic now, so catering to their expectations is something all industries are trying to figure out.”
Some of the ideas posed by Aron include a “texting section” or an entire auditorium that is more mobile friendly. However, nothing has been finalized as of yet and it’s entirely possible this idea will never even get off the ground.
“It’s really a hit-or-miss thing,” Romanenko explains. “People go to a movie theater to watch a movie. A couple hours without using the phone is not really a big deal, especially since a person is paying for the movie and the experience, but maybe AMC is on to something.”
Both moviegoers and film critics have their doubts about this tactic, with both agreeing that texting and other cell phone usage can be distracting. They also share the opinion that the movie theater experience as something that will be hurt by the constant use of cell phones.
“At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to what consumers want,” Romanenko concludes. “If some are open to mobile-friendly movie theaters, then this concept may work; if not, then there’s no need for concern. But regardless, this entire ordeal shows how industries are making an effort to be innovative and not just sitting back expecting things to just happen.”
Ohming Technology provides its customers with better ways to charge cellphones. The Charge M.E from Ohming Technology can charge up to eight devices simultaneously and can charge both new and legacy devices without the need for a computer connection.
